As part of the Triple R Saddle Club gymkhana series, the Leland Miller Memorial Gymkhana will jump-start fair activities Sunday, July 20, at the Phillips County Fairgrounds, followed by team roping.
Events for the gymkhana will include pole bending, stake race, flags, barrel race and keyhole race.
Entries will be accepted Sunday at 8 a.m. with the first of two gymkhanas beginning at 9 a.m. The second gymkhana will officially start one hour after the first one concludes.
There will be four age groups for the day. The PeeWee group will consist of kids up to 7 years of age; juniors, age 8-13; seniors, age 14-18; and adult division, age 19 and older.
The Triple R Saddle Club gymkhana series runs from April through September in Haxtun, with two gymkhanas each month. Points are accumulated throughout the season, with awards presented to the top points earner at a potluck after the last gymkhana of the season Sunday, Sept. 21.
Six points are awarded to the winner of each event, five to second, four to third, three to second and two to fifth. Those who enter but do not place also receive a point.
According to Melinda Groshans, who has been in charge of putting on the gymkhanas for over 20 years, April’s gymkhanas were postponed due to inclement weather. She noted that the number of gymkhanas in September may double to bring the total gymkhana count back up to 12.
