Eighteen Holyoke High School students participated in FFA District Career Development Events (CDEs) on the Northeastern Junior College campus in Sterling on Tuesday, April 14.
Students from four districts and 33 different schools competed in a variety of events, including ag mechanics, livestock judging, horse judging, floriculture, business management, crops and land classification.
Two Holyoke students won individual placings in horse judging. Janna Smith earned a first place and Patricia Adams, fifth. This was held at the Logan County Fairgrounds along with the livestock judging, and students had to view and rank numerous pens of live animals, including sheep, hogs and horses.
The students had to give reasons why they ranked the animals the way they did and why the feature of one animal made it superior to another.
Several Holyoke teams also placed in CDEs throughout the day. Team members and placings are listed with their events:
Horse judging—Sarah Heermann, Patricia Adams, Janna Smith, Coleton Spitz and Kendra Timm, second.
Livestock judging—Brian Strong, Mariah Struckmeyer, Emma Adams and Erin Lebsack, fifth.
Land classification—Evan Swanson, Ryan Baumgartner, Austin Tharp, Reid Baumgartner and Marissa Smith, fourth.
Crop judging—Mitch Wittman, Preston King, Skyler Dittmer and Brent Vasa, third.
