Liberty tree finds new home within the city park PDF Print E-mail
Written by Holyoke Enterprise

The weather wasn’t ideal, but nonetheless, a Liberty Tree was planted in City Park Wednesday, April 27.
With help from Mayor Orville Tonsing, city employees Mike Roll and Duane Werner fill dirt around the
base of the tree while students in Laura Loutensock and Kate Shoemaker’s fourth-grade classes watch.

CSU Extension horticulturist Linda Langelo received the tree from the Elm Research Institute and made
a request to the city to have the tree planted in the park. The Liberty Tree, or American Elm, survived the
Dutch Elm disease and the Research Institute is working to repopulate the nation with the tree. Holyoke
City Council members JC Peckham and Steve Moore also attended the planting last week.
