Sanford girls and Denver Lutheran boys claimed the gold balls in 2A State Basketball Championships Saturday, March 12 at CSU-Pueblo.
Sanford girls win
Sanford had been seeded #7 in the girls’ bracket and upset #2 Akron 50-31 in the opening round.
Other opening round games found #1 Sedgwick County defeating #8 Holyoke 48-37, #4 Evangelical Christian Academy over #5 Hayden 63-56 and #3 Rye edged #6 Lutheran Parker 45-43.
Semifinal games resulted in a 63-58 overtime win for ECA over Sedgwick County and a 45-34 victory for Sanford over Rye.
Sanford defeated ECA 31-28 for the championship, and Sedgwick County took third with a 37-29 win over Rye.
In consolations, Holyoke ousted Hayden 41-40 and Akron booted Lutheran Parker 52-33 Friday.
That pegged Holyoke and Akron in the consolation championship, with Akron coming out on top, 47-43.
Denver Lutheran boys #1
#3 seeded Denver Lutheran ended on top of the boys’ bracket in the 2011 state championships.
In first-round boys’ games, #1 Yuma pounded #8 Hoehne 51-30, #5 Lutheran Parker defeated #4 Denver Christian 46-36, Denver Lutheran squeaked by #6 Peyton 51-50 and #2 Ignacio thumped #7 Wiggins 56-31.
In the semis, Yuma was upset by Lutheran Parker 43-41 in overtime and Lutheran dominated Ignacio 65-41.
Denver Lutheran won the championship with a 61-48 win over Lutheran Parker. Yuma finished third, defeating Ignacio 41-39.
In consolation play, Denver Christian trounced Hoehne 72-44 and Wiggins ousted Peyton 56-52. Denver Christian won the 78-59 consolation championship over Wiggins.
Sterling, Caliche win
Other area schools were victorious in their quests for the gold ball as the Sterling boys won the 4A basketball tournament and Caliche boys won in 1A.
Fleming girls lost a three-point game to Simla in the 1A championship.
