|Crisis response plan prepared for school|

With good involvement from the community, a crisis response plan has been prepared for Holyoke School District Re-1J.
Crisis Management Coordinator Kim Young reviewed the plan at the Jan. 20 Board of Education meeting.
On the outside of the plan booklets is a safe2tell number for students to call if needed. It emphasizes when young people feel threatened or unsafe, they need to know they are safe2tell.
In an attractive pamphlet-style format, one side of the crisis response plan clearly leads to four instruction pages.
The four topics are: evacuate, shelter, lockout and lockdown.
Young said the focus is simplicity, and each of the four areas includes easy-to-read instructions.
The second side of the response plan leads to the following subtitle pages: bomb threat, child abuse, injury/illness, missing person, sexual assault and suicide.
Again, instructions are presented in precise, simple language for ease in use.
Young noted the committee involved in preparing the crisis response plan included law enforcement (sheriff and police department), hospital administrator, fire department, city superintendent, school superintendent, principals, teachers from each building, groundsperson, transportation and maintenance.
Additionally, the Haxtun school superintendent and crisis management coordinator were on board for discussion.
Young said she was pleased with how Haxtun stepped forward to share in the plan.
The committee put ideas together, attempting to keep the plan simple and easy to comprehend and use.
Young said the plan is the first of many phases, and is subject to re-evaluation on a regular basis. She acknowledged it’s a wonderful community to work with, and input was sincerely appreciated.
Supt. Bret Miles cited the quick turnaround to put the plan together. He praised the commitment from the committee and great involvement from the community overall.
Miles said they don’t believe the plan is perfect, but it’s a place to start and to build on.
