Wiebers retirement, extra-duty assignments approved PDF Print E-mail
Written by Brenda Johnson Brandt

Coaching and other extra-duty assignments, as well as the resignation/retirement of band director Pat Wiebers, were approved at the June 1 meeting of Holyoke School District Re-1J Board of Education.

Wiebers’ resignation is effective at the end of her current contract. With her retirement announcement, Wiebers said she will be starting “Act II” of her life.

Prior to approving extra-duty assignments for 2010-11, the board heard from recent HHS graduate Ryan Baumgartner. Board members also held a 30-minute executive session with the superintendent and two principals for discussion of personnel matters relating to recommendations for the extra-duty posts.

Baumgartner expressed support for his dad, John Baumgartner, who has served as the HHS boys’ basketball coach. Ryan addressed concern for the way his dad was treated, adding he felt there was no respect nor fairness in the way the coaching evaluation/assignment was handled.

Nine vacancies still exist on the 2010-11 extra-duty list, in addition to the band director and musical positions slotted for Wiebers prior to the announcement of her retirement.

Supt. Bret Miles pointed out four new assignments as changes from 2009-10. They include Scott Dille, head HS boys’ basketball coach; Jack Garrison, head HS wrestling coach; Jim Yakel, head JH girls’ basketball coach; and Jane Zink, JH spiritleader sponsor.

Football coaching stipends are $2,500 for head JH/HS coach, $1,500 each for three assistants, $1,400 for one assistant, $1,100 for one assistant, $854 each for two assistants and $1,200 for head JH/assistant.

Other head HS coaching jobs, band director and play director carry a $3,102 stipend; head JH coaches, $1,825; assistant HS coaches, weight room sponsor and HS spiritleader coach, $1,861; assistant JH coaches and JH spiritleader, $1,241; and choir director and musical director, $932 each.

Individuals approved for the extra-duty list for 2010-11 include Jane Zink, HS and JH spiritleader sponsor; Rod Trumper, weight room sponsor; Marcia Dalton, choir director; and Carla Mayfield, play director.

JH StuCo requests help with bench project

Holyoke Junior High Student Council members Makayla Spitz and Rosa Ochoa showed details of a bench project planned on the north side of Holyoke Junior High.

It includes two eight-foot benches and two six-foot benches, all with skateboard deterrents, at a total cost of $1,765. Explaining their fund raisers for the year, the girls indicated Student Council can only afford half the cost and would like to share costs with the school district.
