HHS softball action takes to the field this Saturday, Sept. 5 when the Lady Dragons travel to Eaton for a 10:30 a.m. ball game and then to Valley for a 2 p.m. contest.

Seventeen girls comprise the HHS team, led by nine returning letterwinners.

Returning with letters this season are seniors Molly Fricke and Brittany Durbin; juniors Marci Vasa, Makenzie Ault from Revere HS and Macey Pierce from Haxtun; and sophomores Laura Gerk, Jordan Zeiler, Karci Lockwood from Haxtun and Ashley Campbell from Revere.

Three Haxtun players and two from Sedgwick County join the Holyoke girls to form the Dragon team.

Coach Ashley Clayton begins her first year as head coach, after working with the softball team last year as a volunteer.

Clayton competed for four years at Fort Morgan High School and on competitive ASANUSSSA teams. She received an athletic scholarship to the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, where she played catcher for three years until she suffered an injury.

She assisted younger kids in summer ball programs, in addition to helping with last year’s HHS team.

Ron Lock continues to stay involved with the girls’ softball program, serving as assistant coach this year. Also assisting the team as a volunteer is long-time ball program enthusiast Mike Meusborn. Sophomore Amy Krogmeier is team manager.

Commenting on the Dragon team almost two weeks into practices, coach Clayton commended the girls for being very competitive. “They’re always up for a challenge, always wanting to get better,” she added.

“Our competition is stiff,” admitted the coach. She noted many of the teams Holyoke will face have much more summer game experience, while the local girls played only six games this summer.

Coach Clayton is excited to see people take a leadership role and rise to the challenge that’s put to them—to communicate and work together as a team.

She added she is excited for all the potential for this team. “It’s been fun so far,” said Clayton.

Following Saturday’s season openers, Holyoke’s softball schedule includes:
