Holyoke girls continue to face brutal schedule

This season has been brutal for the Holyoke girls basketball team. Seven of Holyoke’s opponents on the season are currently ranked in the Class 2A top ten.

That includes the Dragons’ final three regular-season opponents, who happen to be Nos. 1, 2 and 3 in this week’s Class 2A rankings.

Holyoke will travel to No. 1 Merino Thursday, then, hopefully, host No. 2 Wiggins Friday. Rounding out the trifecta is No. 3 Akron, the Dragons’ Feb. 17 opponent.

“Our schedule is loaded with ranked teams,” Head Coach Arlan Scholl said, adding he hopes to play the last two home games against Wiggins and Akron on Holyoke’s home floor.

The Dragons haven’t had an official home game since early January, as the Holyoke gym continues to dry out.

That includes moving last Friday’s  game against No. 6 Sedgwick County (10-5) to Ovid.

The game featured very good shooting from behind the arc. Holyoke made 11-26 3-point attempts, while Sedgwick County rattled in 13-29.

The Dragons stayed within four or five points for a lot of the first quarter, but Sedgwick County scored the final four points of the opening stanza to leave Holyoke trailing 13-21.

The deficit swelled to 18 points, 16-34, before the Dragons closed out the half with a 14-2 run.

Coming out of the halftime locker room trailing 30-39, the third quarter got away from Holyoke with the Dragons being outscored 7-21.
