Students of the Month

    Students of the Month for November at Holyoke JR/SR High School have been named. They are senior Luis Ponce-Cortez, nominated by English teacher Amber Schroetlin, and seventh-grader Madysen Powell, nominated by math teacher Cristine Mallari.
    Ponce-Cortez’s nomination letter read, “Luis Ponce-Cortez recently transferred into my English class after being in a class for English language learners. In just a couple weeks, Luis has impressed me with his dedication to his own learning. He takes each assignment seriously and gives his best effort. On a recent writing assignment, he brought his work to me to check over it, and we discussed how he could improve his writing. After seeing just one example, Luis was able to identify other sentences that he could fix in his own paragraph. I am proud of Luis for putting in the effort to make himself the best student he can be.”
    Powell’s nomination letter read, “Whenever I need help, I can always count on Mady. She is responsible, hardworking and honest. Even if I don’t ask for it, she would still reach out and asks if I do, which I think is a rare trait nowadays.
    “Since Mady gets math easily, she would finish her task early, and when she’s done she would reach out to her classmates and help those who struggle.
    “I nominate Mady for her positive attitude and leadership qualities. She serves as a great role model.”
