N.E. BOCES receives grant

$731,356 to promote health and wellness in area schools

The Northeast Colorado Board of Cooperative Educational Services is pleased to announce that they are the proud recipient of a Creating Healthy Schools local planning and assessment grant through the Colorado Health Foundation.

The award is a two-year grant in the amount of $731,356 that will focus on comprehensive physical activity, nutrition environments and healthy food options; school cultures that are supportive of student and staff health and wellness; health education; student health services; and student behavioral health needs. The Keep Moving Program will benefit the 12 districts in the Northeast Colorado BOCES service area: Akron, Buffalo, Frenchman, Haxtun, Holyoke, Julesburg, Lone Star, Otis, Plateau, Revere, Wray and Yuma.

According to the Physical Education in Colorado Report, developed by the PE for All Colorado Coalition, “only 45.2 percent of Colorado kids, aged 5-14, exercise for 60 minutes every day,” and “Colorado is one of only four states with no PE requirement, resulting in significant variance in the amount and quality of PE programs in schools across the state.” The Keep Moving Program will encourage physical activity in the 12 districts by implementing 100-Mile Clubs, providing activity monitors, and purchasing recess and classroom activity equipment.
