Mayor wannabes study local government

“I would make a good mayor because I ... care, am smart, agree with good ideas, am experienced, love pets, would help the poor, am funny and crazy, am kind and sweet, am bossy.”

Third grade perspectives on good mayoral traits ran the full gamut when Holyoke teachers Carly Daniel and Tarah Priddy recently engaged the 31 students in a local government learning activity.

Each student filled out an application and wrote letters to the town to detail their thoughts on why they would be a good mayor.

They did presentations to the class about various government jobs. And they learned about budgeting for a town, taxes and fees, and where collected funds go.

They designed their own park that they would build if they were mayor. Their letters referenced suggestions for a number of park or recreational ideas, including a dog park, waterslide, dirt bike rally, frog pond, ice cream truck, arcade, trampoline park and more.
