JR/SR high students rewarded for academics

Academic achievement was applauded Tuesday, May 9, when students in Holyoke JR/SR High were recognized for excellence in the classroom during the 2016-17 school year.

National Honor Society members hosted and conducted the ceremony in the HHS auditorium.

NHS president Juana Penzing welcomed those attending, and chapter members opened the program by introducing staff members with a brief bio for each of them.

Band director Chris Lampkin presented the John Philip Sousa Band Award to Trey Bennett and the Director’s Award to Emali Torres.

Vocal music director Marcia Dalton recognized Emily Krogmeier with the National Choral Award and Jaxie Gerk with the Director’s Award for Choral Excellence.

At the close of the program, the new NHS officers for 2017-18 were announced as follows: Regan Van Overbeke, president; Tyler Lamm, vice president; Anna Jelden, secretary; Taylor Hendrix, treasurer; and Grace Dille, Student Council representative.
