Five Years Ago

Nov. 2, 2017

Progress on the Phillips County Fairgrounds Pavilion and Education Center has been ongoing for over a year. As of Oct. 24, development has suddenly become more tangible. The sale ring is one of several old buildings being demolished to make way for the new structure. Also razed were the west beef barn and the horse barn. The hog/sheep building and the grooming shed will be disassembled and erected later for other county uses. Bids are being taken for the scale house, and it will soon be moved.

Dorothy (Ortner) Horrell and nine other women comprise the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame Class of 2018 as the next group of extraordinary contemporary and historical women with significant ties to Colorado who have made enduring and exemplary contributions to their field, inspired and elevated the status of women, and helped open new frontiers for women and society.

Since its first meeting July 10, 1887, First United Methodist Church of Holyoke has had a rich history spanning 125 years. The congregation invites the community to celebrate their 125th anniversary with them this Sunday, Nov. 4, at the church at 230 E. Furry St.

Remodeling began Oct. 23 at Holyoke Marketplace to make space that will be used to house Holyoke Pharmacy. Jamie Hanes, Pharm.D., of Imperial, Nebraska, and Jason Burke of Omaha, Nebraska, have partnered for the joint venture that will bring a new pharmacy to the Holyoke community.

4G service is now available to Viaero Wireless customers. This 4G service is up to 30 times faster than Viaero’s former service.

Nov. 6, 1997

Misty Dockins, a 1992 graduate of Holyoke High School and the daughter of Penny Dockins, was recently accepted to Up With People for next year.

Dr. Myrlen Chesnut’s staff is now operating Family Practice of Holyoke, with some of the former staff members helping to get the previous accounts in order.

Gifted and Talented students from Holyoke Grade School participated in Night of the Notables on Oct. 28. Students in the program select a famous, eminent person in whom they are interested and do a variety of activities to prepare for Night of the Notables, which is a culminating evening activity where students convey all the knowledge they have learned.

Nov. 2, 1972

The political awareness class at Holyoke High School is sponsoring free babysitting and taxi service on Election Day for anyone who needs the service.

Competitive swimming will be held Monday, Nov. 6, at the Holyoke swimming pool for ages 8 and under through 17 years of age, boys and girls.

Holyoke residents awakened yesterday morning to find the ground covered with about 10 inches of snow. The snow started falling Tuesday night and was still falling at this writing. As usual, many residents were caught without snow tires, and the streets were lined with many marooned cars.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Nov. 6, 1947

A recent report by Gerald E. Riepe, sanitary engineer for the health department, shows inadequate garbage disposal in most small towns in northeastern Colorado. Garbage collection throughout the smaller towns has created a serious problem and caused a large increase in the rat population.

The PCHS student council sponsored a school dance Tuesday, Oct. 28, for the student body. Lively music was furnished by “Dutch” Hagemann, who was kind enough to be the automatic record changer.

The annual fall meeting of the Phillips County Education Association will be held at the Haxtun High School on Friday, Nov. 7. The schools will be closed here on that date.
