Dear Solomon, what’s the value of being fair?

Do you have any pet peeves? I’ve got plenty of them, but No. 1 on my list is people not taking responsibility for their own actions or inactions. It drives me batty to hear someone blaming the government, or the high cost of living, or their boss, or the president, or anyone or anything else for their problems. This is a struggle for me because, for goodness’ sake, they can’t even take a share of the blame for their problems or mistakes. Someone else is always completely at fault.

Another one of my pet peeves is at the grocery store. I do the vast majority of the grocery shopping for my wife and me. Most meals that require ground beef require 1 pound. I dare you to find ground beef that is packaged fresh at the store level in 1-pound increments. It’s always 1.22 pounds or 1.34 pounds. The machines they use could just as easily produce 1.00 pound or close to it, but it costs more if there is more in the package. So, I buy however many packages I need to get close to an even number of pounds and then when I get home I even them out and freeze them in 1-pound packages of my own!

Although technically the grocers are not being unfair, assuming you truly get 1.27 pounds of ground beef, it feels that way. (I haven’t yet gone so far as to weigh the beef when I get home.)

I probably need to be careful with voicing my concern too loudly with that last pet peeve, as I am certain there are applications of this one that likely strike close to home. Our advice from Solomon today deals with truly being unfair, and again, there are ways this probably hits home with all of us. Solomon says, “God demands fairness in every deal you make; the standard is set by him.”
