4-H officers duties explained

    Phillips County 4-H clubs are gearing up for the 2018 4-H year.  One of the main items of business during this time is electing new club officers to lead the club during the coming year. It is an honor to be selected by fellow club members to serve in leadership positions.  First-time officers learn many new things.  Those who have already served in an officer position work hard to improve their ability to serve their club.
    New officers are a member of a team which includes the other officers and the club leaders. That team is responsible for giving leadership to the club and its activities. To be a good officer, members must know the duties of their respective offices and how to carry out those duties. Knowing the duties of the other officers will help the team work together in conducting club business. Phillips County 4-H officers have the opportunity to attend an officer training to become familiar with their officer duties.
    At one point or another, you have probably been elected to an officer position or have been involved with a club or organization that elects officers. But how many of us actually know the specific duties of each office? The following is a brief snapshot of the main 4-H officer positions and their responsibilities.
    The president has an important job. Presidents are elected based on their leadership abilities. The following are duties of president:
    —Plan the business meeting.
    —Prepare the meeting agenda.
    —Be knowledgeable of parliamentary procedure.
    —Preside over the meeting and direct the business of the meeting.
    —Keep order, be courteous but firm.
    —Encourage everyone to participate in the meeting.
    —Cast deciding vote in case of a tie.
    —Appoint committees.
