Vona Lanora Covert Maine of Greeley, formerly of Holyoke, was born May 6, 1932, in Wauneta, Nebraska, to Orville F. and Velma L. Myers Covert at the home of her maternal grandparents, Charley J. and Justina A. Myers. She died Nov. 28, 2018, at her home in Greeley.
Vona attended elementary school through seventh grade in a one-room country school in rural Chase County, Nebraska. This was a very small school — usually attended by relatives and the teachers were relatives. During her seventh-grade year, there were three students — her brother and a cousin whose sister was the teacher. In 1946, the Covert family moved to a wheat farm east of Holyoke, and she attended Evergreen School for eighth grade. Vona graduated from Phillips County High School in 1950.
Vona married Carl Eugene “Gene” Maine in Holyoke on July 30, 1950. They were blessed with two children, Julie and Byron. She was involved with the children’s activities as a Brownie leader and Cub Scout den mother, homeroom mother for both kids and many school activities.
After they were both in school, she had different jobs in Holyoke, working in a bakery, Montgomery Ward, receptionist in the doctor’s office and the local hospital. She served 14 years as deputy county treasurer of Phillips County. The Maine family was baptized at the First Christian Church in Holyoke.
It always made her day when the family came home for family dinners. She loved cooking and making the favorite dishes of everyone.
After retiring, Vona and Gene bought a new fifth-wheel and enjoyed traveling full time. They enjoyed spending the winters in Arizona.
Through the years Vona enjoyed crafts, and while in Holyoke she enjoyed the friends of the QDD Hobby Club. They always made a craft item that her children enjoyed seeing the next morning.
Vona so enjoyed seeing her family and especially visits with the great-grandchildren and seeing them in all their activities.
Vona is survived by her daughter, Julie Scott; son, Byron and wife Kathy Maine of Greeley; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, Brenda and husband Blane Lancaster and Kyle of Greeley, Amy and Leighton Wyscaver and Tucker and Jack of Platteville, Kamron Maine and daughter Dilecia of Greeley, and Cassidy Maine and fiance Billy Mansfield and Draeden and Cruz of Greeley; brother, Marlin Covert; brother-in-law, Bud Biesemeier; sisters-in-law, Elsie Mae and Leo Fisbeck and Onna Lee and Woody Ready; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of over 50 years, Gene; her parents; her first granddaughter, Stacey Dee Clark; and her son-in-law, Francis Nichols.
The funeral service was scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 6, at 10:30 a.m. at First Christian Church in Holyoke, with Pastor Mike Brown officiating. Interment was set to follow at the Holyoke Cemetery. There was no viewing.
Baucke Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
