Marjorie Helen Brewer, 84 years of age, died Sept. 3, 2017, at Melissa Memorial Hospital in Holyoke. She was born Feb. 18, 1933, in Haxtun to John and Helen (Nauman) Evans.
Marj graduated from Haxtun High School in 1950 and moved to Holyoke, where she met the one true love of her lifetime, Gerald “Bud,” while she was working at the Phillips County Extension Office. They were married June 3, 1961, in the Haxtun Methodist Church. They completed their family when they adopted their daughters, DeeAnn in 1967 and Sherri in 1969.
Marj spent most of her life utilizing her legendary organizational skills to serve others. She was Mother Advisor to the Rainbow Girls, Worthy Matron for Eastern Star, and past president and 66-year member of PEO, while serving on various boards and committees for her church and community.
Marj and Bud owned and operated Smythe’s Department Store for many years. She was a deputy for Phillips County Treasurer Lois Lipker and was one of the last Phillips County registrars.
While Marj enjoyed singing in the church choir, playing the piano, doing cross-stitch and knitting, and collecting bells and teapots, it was her five grandchildren that filled her heart the most.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 56 years, Bud of Holyoke; daughter, DeeAnn Brewer and husband Steve Peist of Anthem, Arizona; daughter, Sherri Brewer and husband Kerry Blomme of Minden, Nebraska; grandchildren, Dalton and Cole Blomme and Emerald, Magnolia and Dashiell Peist; sisters, Mary Louise and Lorraine of Sterling; brother, Darrell of Palisade, Nebraska; and beloved nieces and nephews, treasured neighbors and irreplaceable friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Etta Marie Dix; and brothers, Harold and Robert.
Services were held Sept. 8 at the United Methodist Church in Holyoke, with Pastor Al Strauss officiating.
Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church, PEO Scholarship Fund or the Arthritis Foundation.
Baucke Funeral Home in Holyoke was in charge of arrangements.
