Jackie Krogmeier of rural Holyoke died Nov. 22, 2019, at Sedgwick County Memorial Nursing Home at the age of 89. She was born July 3, 1930, in St. Joseph, Missouri, the youngest of seven children from Ernest Alvador and Eleise Rosita (Heyde) Hodgden. Her family lovingly referred to her as a “firecracker that came early.”

Jackie was baptized and confirmed in the faith at St. James Catholic Church in St. Joseph, where she also attended grade school. She graduated from Convent of the Sacred Heart High School in 1948 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Sister’s Hospital Nursing School, working at the hospital after graduation. It was there that she met Vincent Krogmeier while his brother Phillip was a patient under her care. Vincent said he “fell in love at first sight” and they began a whirlwind romance, marrying on May 5, 1958, at the cathedral in St. Joseph.

They spent their first year in Holyoke, moved to Amherst the next year and lived there until 1977 when they moved to a farm northeast of Holyoke where Jackie lived for the rest of her life. Jackie and Vincent were married for 52 years before his death in June 2010. To this union were born six children: James Vincent, Janet Marie, Paul Bernard, Judith Marie, Ernest Matthew and Joseph Leo.
