Elwin Poe

Elwin Guy Poe was born Jan. 24, 1938, in Holyoke to Guy and Nola Poe. He was the eldest of their three children. He died peacefully on June 9, 2022. At the time of his death, Elwin was a resident of Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center in Brush.

Elwin was raised in the Amitie and Pleasant Valley areas southeast of Holyoke, attending Amitie School and graduating from Holyoke High School. He served the friends and family in that community his entire life. From dragging and lining the PV Ballpark field and building it to be an important gathering place, to 4-H sponsorships, square dances and community card parties, Elwin was always available to ensure everyone had a good time.

He married Ruth Lockwood, and together they raised three children on the family farm. He later married RoAnn Goddard, adopting her two children. Being the son of Colorado State Rep. Guy Poe, he passes on the legacy of the love of politics to future generations.

He was a member of several agricultural organizations, including the Colorado Corn Growers Association, serving as president; the National Corn Growers Association, serving as secretary; the Colorado Wool Growers Association; and Farmers Union.

He traveled extensively across the country, supporting corn growers and agriculture. He sold Pioneer seed for decades, winning many national sales awards. He loved flying his Cessna, treasure hunting and playing cards.

First Christian Church of Holyoke was Elwin’s church home. He was a devoted member and served there as a deacon, youth leader, Bible study teacher, bus ministry coordinator and driver, and elder.

Elwin was a leader and servant, a visionary and a hard worker. He never met a stranger. Motivated by generosity, he served his community, congregation, friends and political affiliations with passion.

Elwin is survived by his son, Dan and wife Narda of Midland, Texas; son, Kirk and wife Mary of Fruita; daughter, Lori Dawn Phillips of Rio Verde, Arizona; son, Jeff Poe and wife Tanya of Sterling; son, Wes Poe and wife Shanelle of Emmett, Idaho; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; brother, Noel Poe and wife Mary of Kanab, Utah; sister, Marilee Riley of Ault; and a host of extended family and friends.
