Carl attended school in Marshfield, Missouri. He traveled on a harvest crew to Holyoke, where he met Ermagene Velma Adams at the skating rink. They courted for a year and were married on Nov. 5, 1949.

Carl worked for Holt County Co-op in O’Neill, Nebraska, from 1958-1991. He enjoyed visiting with all of his fuel customers, sharing fishing and hunting stories. Carl didn’t know a stranger and loved talking.

Carl was an avid fisherman, deer hunter and expert homemade ice cream maker. Carl enjoyed fishing and hunting with his sons and grandchildren. His fuel customers would share fresh cream with him often for homemade ice cream. Carl loved making homemade ice cream and taught all of his grandchildren, nieces and nephews how to hand-crank it. His rule was “if you don’t crank, you don’t eat it.” Carl loved to carve diamond willow canes. He was very proud to collect the diamond willow trees near Atkinson, Nebraska, to make into his crafty canes.
