In an unanticipated turn of events, the city of Holyoke received and accepted an offer of settlement from Rupert and Claire O’Neal with regard to the lawsuit that has spanned close to three years. The lawsuit involves the city’s use of the drainage water pit on O’Neal land southeast of Cobblestone Inn & Suites.

With a go-live date of May 1, AirLife by HealthOne will be stationed at Melissa Memorial Hospital in Holyoke to provide 24/7 helicopter service for air transport.

Phillips County Historical Society is celebrating its 50th anniversary with an April 8 celebration.

Holyoke High School senior Luke Krogmeier has been named a recipient of the Boettcher Scholarship, which is essentially a full ride to any four-year institution in Colorado.

As of April 2, McKenna Heldenbrand is the new director of the Holyoke Chamber of Commerce.

New fuel pumps at Scholl Oil & Transportation Company represent a 30-year update, as the company recently replaced all of their 24-hour cardlock system pumps with a new electronic digital system.

Heginbotham Trust has pledged $10,000 toward a remodeling project at the Phillips County Court House, dependent on a grant from the Colorado Historical Fund. At their meeting on March 29, commissioners explained that they are applying for a grant for around $92,000 to redo the windows and update the chimney, with a cash match from the county of $40,000. 

Brittney’s Botanical Buttons has blossomed into quite a business for Brittney Ferguson. It’s been four and a half years since she was left in critical condition as a backseat passenger in a pickup rollover accident in Laramie, Wyoming. The $1 flowers, made out of colorful buttons and wire, are something that she can focus on, intently and carefully picking out just the right combinations for each flower.

Victoria Timm, a 2008 HHS graduate, is finishing up her college basketball career with the University of Northern Colorado Bears. Timm’s 126 games played, 67 of which she started in, ranks as the second highest total in UNC history.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago

April 9, 1998

Approval of a tavern liquor license for Bill and Kristie Pelle took only a few seconds at the April 6 meeting after being tabled from a March 24 public hearing. At the public hearing, the primary question seemed to be whether a tavern license should be approved or if the Pelles should be required to reapply for a hotel/restaurant liquor license.

The Super Bowl Champion Denver Broncos will be taking on a team from the Wray area in a benefit basketball game on April 30. Proceeds from the game, which is to be played in the Wray High School gymnasium, will go to the Wray inline skating rink.

 

Fifty Years Ago

April 5, 1973

Another week of rain and snow further delayed field preparation and spring planting in the county, as fields are extremely muddy and water-soaked.

A Qualified Babysitter’s clinic will be conducted at the Holyoke Grade School, starting April 9. This is sponsored by the Golden Plains Area Extension service.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

April 8, 1948

Voters of Holyoke defeated a local option proposal at the town’s election, which was held Tuesday of this week. The proposal would prohibit the sale of liquor and all malt beverages within the corporate limits of the town. There were 347 who voted no on the proposal, and 257 voted yes.

Eighteen chain postal cards have been received at the Holyoke post office since last Saturday, stating, “In three days, make 6 copies of this card, leaving off the first name and adding yours to the bottom. Mail to friends. Send the top name 1 tea towel, etc.” These postal cards are unlawful and cannot be sent through the mail.

A school on laundering will be conducted by Evelyn Cheleski, factory-trained in modern laundry practices, in the Coler Appliance Store on Friday afternoon, April 9.

Loss from fire of 848 creosoted poles, 35 feet in length and of a value of $13,325.21, occurred in Sterling Friday afternoon of last week. The poles were the property of Highline Electric Association and were to be used for the construction of additional distribution lines in the Sterling-Julesburg areas. The origin of the fire has not been determined, but it is reported that it originated from a trash fire nearby.
