Dragon girls battle through injuries, sickness

One of these days, everything will fall into place for the Holyoke girls basketball team.

But until then, the Dragons will keep battling through injuries and illnesses as they look to pick up their third win of the season.

Holyoke remained down two starters when it traveled to Wray Friday. Elise Krogmeier continues to heal from a knee injury and this week, point guard Audrey Talavera was sick.

Head Coach Arlan Scholl said there’s a quote he often shares with his players: “It’s not focusing on the adversity that we encounter, rather it is how we react to the adversity.”

Scholl said his team has encountered plenty of adversity the past few weeks as they have had injuries and sickness, and been without several key players.

“However, the rest of our team, including some freshman without too much varsity experience, have stepped up and played hard and our team has continued to compete,” he added. “As a coach, that is all I can ask and I have not been disappointed with the effort on the court.”

At Wray, both teams went to work from behind the 3-point line in the first quarter. Grace Roberts and Courtlyn Kinnie made 3s for Holyoke, but the Eagles rattled in four 3-pointers in the quarter.

Anessa Colglazier made a 3-pointer in the second quarter, as well as all four of her free throws.

Hannah Lindholm and Ellie Kleve also added first-half field goals, but Holyoke trailed 17-36 at halftime.

Behind baskets by Roberts, Colglazier, Kleve and Kinnie, the Dragons outscored Wray in the third quarter, 13-11, and were behind 30-47 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Two 3s by Kinnie were Holyoke’s only field goals of the fourth quarter to wrap up the 37-63 loss.
