Just like riding a bike: Students celebrate bike to school day

Without a bike to school day event last year, Holyoke Elementary School students picked up right where they left off the year before and hit the streets for some fun and exercise for the last half hour of the school day Wednesday, May 5.

Grade levels were staggered at the start line to avoid congestion, and students turned out in droves with their bikes and scooters to cruise the streets around the football fields and the JR/SR high.

Holyoke EMS director Brady Ring was set up at the start line to hand out bike helmets from Melissa Memorial Hospital. A total of 65 helmets were passed out for the kids to use and keep.

Many students brought their own helmets, which took the form of cats, unicorns, movie characters, spiky mohawks and more. Students did tricks, rode with friends or kept their own pace as they took advantage of the nice weather and had some outdoor fun.
