Student testing results reviewed by school board

Holyoke student test scores as compared to state averages, as well as growth information for local students, were reviewed by Holyoke School District Re-1J Board of Education at its Sept. 17 meeting.

Data from SAT, NWEA and Colorado Measures for Academic Success were presented.

Superintendent Kyle Stumpf commended counselor Angela Powell for her role in reviewing the data to make it useful for the district. He said he would like Powell, as well as principals Shane Walkinshaw and Andrea Kammer, to give a report at a future board meeting to show what they’re doing with the data.

In SAT average scores for students in grades 9, 10 and 11, HHS averages were close to, but under, the state averages. The Holyoke ninth grade English/reading/writing SAT average was 462, slightly higher than the 457 state average.

In CMAS testing in grades 4-9, Holyoke students outperformed the state average in science. A total of 32% of Holyoke students met or exceeded the standard, while 30.7% was recorded statewide.

Other CMAS averages showed 19.9% for Holyoke to 34.7% statewide in math, 12.8% Holyoke and 21% statewide for social studies, and 38.1% Holyoke and 45.8% statewide for English languge arts/literacy.

Stumpf highlighted CMAS data from 2018, which revealed that averages for English Language Learners, minority students, and free and reduced lunch price students in Holyoke met or exceeded the state averages in most cases.

Detailed student growth data compared to school norms projected growth were also presented to the board.
