School offers first-aid trainings

As part of their in-service training, Holyoke School District teachers and coaches were offered CPR and first-aid training on Monday, Aug. 13.
Holyoke School District employees are required to renew their CPR training every two years. Coaches are also required by the Colorado High School Activities Association to have first-aid certification.
The lessons were led by district employees Brenda Krueger and Kim Young, both of whom are Red Cross-certified instructors.
CPR techniques are taught yearly, to accommodate the rotation of staff. As part of their CPR training, 56 employees learned how to resuscitate infants, children and adults and use automatic external defibrillators. The district has three AED units — two are located at Holyoke Elementary and Holyoke JR/SR High School, and one accompanies student groups and sports teams on trips.
The first-aid course taught participants how to control bleeding, treat burns and manage sudden illnesses. Although it was optional for noncoaches, Krueger said the course was attended by many elementary school teachers, whose dual function as supervisors during school recess periods often requires them to deal with scrapes and bruises. First-aid kits are stored in the offices of both Holyoke Elementary and Holyoke JR/SR High School.
