4th-graders compete in piggy bank contest

Fourth-grade students of Holyoke Elementary School participated in a piggy bank contest March 5-26.
The top-three winners from each class, along with all of the students, were recognized by Liz Favela from First Pioneer National Bank, who cooperated with CSU Extension in sponsoring the contest.
Winners from 4A were first, “Mr. Weirdy Pants the Cat” by Kayle Berscheid; second, the house by Oscar Rico; and third, the rocket ship by Nic Rascon. Winners from 4B included first, “Don’t Flush Your Savings” toilet by Sophia Bencomo; second, the cash register by Marely Favela; and third, the monster coin eater by Teagan Martin.
First place for each class was awarded a $25 certificate to open a Young Pioneer’s savings. Second place was given $15 for their effort, and third place was given $10. The other participants received a 50 cent coin for their exemplary efforts.
All of the prize money was donated by First Pioneer National Bank of Holyoke, and the students’ banks were put on display at the local bank to share with the community.
Anytime is a great time to talk to children about money and how to manage it; however, with America Saves Week and Financial Literacy Month in April, what better time to team up with teachers to bring this important topic to light for students?
Research has shown as little as 10 hours of instruction positively impacts students’ spending and saving habits.
