Jimena Nuñez holds up her “If I had a Wagon” painting. — Johnson Publications

Painting by Jimena Nuñez featured in ‘If I had a Wagon’ book

She was only in sixth grade when she painted it, but one of Jimena Nuñez’s pieces of artwork has been selected to be included in the Colorado Kids Create “If I had a Wagon” book.
Now a seventh-grader at Holyoke Junior High, Nuñez explained that her elementary art teacher, Christina Martinez, encouraged her to enter the art contest last year, though it wasn’t a requirement for class. Colorado Kids Create writes children’s books about Colorado and the West. The books are then illustrated by students who live in Colorado themselves. All profits from the book sales go toward art scholarships.
As Gov. John Hickenlooper said, “This unique program provides an opportunity for Colorado’s youth to grow from experiences in a way that embraces what is special about our state — creative spirit, exploration, natural beauty.”
