Scholarship endowment announced at M&L Oltjenbruns celebration

    Saturday, Sept. 30, was a day of celebration for M&L Oltjenbruns Farms.
    Family, friends, neighbors and community members shared in the celebration of a farm that’s been in the same family for more than a century.
    As the sun peeked out after an overcast morning, the angle road to Amherst saw lots of traffic as the celebration at the Oltjenbruns farm seven miles northeast of Holyoke drew a community of support.
    Those attending knew they were celebrating several important milestones.
    —Designation as a Centennial Farm that was awarded Aug. 25 at the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo.
    —Listing of the homestead on the National Register of Historic Places.
    —Milton and Leona’s son Ken’s semi-retirement after 36 years of “working the farm.”
    But they were in for a new surprise as Ken spoke for his parents, as well as his siblings, Cheryl Schutz and Nolan Oltjenbruns, and his nephew David Schutz, in announcing the establishment of the M&L Oltjenbruns Farms Scholarship through CSU earlier last week.
    The presidential-level endowed scholarship is being handled through the College of Agricultural Sciences at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.
    “We owe a lot to the university, and this is a way to give back,” said Ken when making the announcement Saturday afternoon.
