SAT, PSAT scores down slightly from state average

New college entrance exam testing in Colorado was put in place this past year, with SAT tests required for all juniors and PSAT for all sophomores. These two tests will be given each spring for the next five years.
Recently released results showed Holyoke student scores slightly lower than the state averages.
Last spring, all juniors in public schools in the state of Colorado were given the SAT test, while from 2001-2016, the ACT test was administered statewide.
Results from last spring’s SAT testing showed Holyoke juniors’ average score at 973, compared to the state average of 1015. A total of 39 local juniors were tested.
While Holyoke sophomores have had the option to take the PSAT test in the past, it became mandatory for all sophomores in Colorado in 2016.
Thirty-five Holyoke sophomores scored an average 901, while the state PSAT average was 948 in the 2017 spring testing.
Next spring, both freshmen and sophomores will be required to take the PSAT test.
SAT testing is closely aligned to classroom work of Colorado schools and focuses on the key skills and concepts that matter for college and career readiness. They include:
—Mathematical concepts, skills and practices important for success in career training programs.
—Reading, comprehending and writing high-quality essays supported by evidence.
SAT/PSAT scores include a score for math and another for English/reading/writing, which are added together for the total score.
Holyoke’s 2017 average junior SAT score of 973 included a 485 average in ERW and 487 in math.
Holyoke sophomores’ PSAT average of 901 included 462 in ERW and 439 in math.
PSAT for 10th-graders tests the same skills and knowledge as the SAT in a way that makes sense for sophomores. In addition to helping sophomores practice for the SAT, it can identify a student’s potential for success in advanced coursework.
Holyoke JR/SR High Principal Susan Ortner noted that test preparation for the SAT and PSAT was conducted last spring, primarily in the third quarter, and will continue this school year.
Linked to the Khan Academy, students can access their previous test scores and practice concepts that they need specific help with, noted Ortner. Additionally, full-length test practices are part of the preparation.
