Reroofing, life skills classroom progress at school

Just in time for the start of the 2017-18 school year, progress reports were given on Holyoke School District’s BEST grant projects including reroofing and a life skills classroom at the JR/SR high school.
At the Aug. 15 school board meeting, Superintendent John McCleary cited an Aug. 9 observation report from Bret Johnson Architecture.
With regard to the roofing project, McCleary noted that shingles are completed on the gym roof, the weightroom roof and the west side of the west ag shop roof. Underlayment and insulation are in progress on the east side of the east ag shop roof, and precautions for temporary waterproofing of the in-progress roof were reviewed during the project observation.
Some items remain to be completed in the life skills classroom at the high school, but it was ready for students on the first day of classes Aug. 17.

Activity/athletic handbook changes highlighted
A fan behavior policy, admission price changes, theatre/drama eligibility, violation clarification and a theatre lettering addition were included in the changes in the activity/athletic handbook for 2017-18.
Athletic director Sandra Rahe highlighted the changes, noting that participants in the fall musical and spring play are subject to semester eligibility, but different weekly eligibility rules.
McCleary pointed out that theatre is not a Colorado High School Activities Association program, so different guidelines are looked at. When a student is ineligible to take part in a play that has been rehearsed for months, it affects the entire cast. Instead, eligibility will be reduced for the next drama production, said McCleary.
Board member Dusty Sprague questioned whether that would be fair to other organizations and asked to see a theater handbook to review the details of the eligibilty determination.
Drama/theatre was added to the lettering policy, highlighting specific criteria required in order to earn a letter.
In another policy change, an addition was made for clarification to the minor and major violations. Conduct detrimental to the team, school or community is unacceptable at any time during the season.
A fan behavior policy is a new addition to the handbook. It cites consequences for first, second and third minor offenses, as well as for major offenses.
