Does your lawn irrigation adequately water the corners and curb edges of your turf? Are there slopes in your lawn that make irrigating challenging? Well, here is a solution. Liven up your landscape edges along walks and other hot areas of your turf.  Rather than attempting to keep those challenging areas of your landscape watered, make use of Plant Select groundcovers that, once established, need no supplemental water. By doing this, you add interest and lots of color through the season to your property. We live in a semi-arid desert where we all would want to save water, unless you have buffalo grass turf. Even with buffalo grass turf, these groundcovers are a good fit.
Some selections that you can try follow:
—Golden-flowered prairie zinnia — Zinnia grandiflora. In the most challenging areas of your landscape where it is hottest and driest, this groundcover, once well-established, will not need supplemental watering. That means it is very drought tolerant. This plant is a native with lots of vigor and yellow flower color from late spring through early summer. Shearing it in the fall will clean out old growth. It will do well along the edges of driveways.
Turkish Veronica — Veronica liwanensis. This is reliably evergreen. This is cold hardy. The cobalt blue flowers will bloom from April-June. It does need well-drained soil with a little supplemental watering in the hot summer to keep the foliage green once the flowers are gone. Mow over the groundcover to remove the seed heads.
