Scheunemann’s Department Store has been a mainstay in Holyoke since 1899. In the early days, the store sold groceries, clothing and other household necessities. In the 1960s, the store discontinued their grocery line but kept selling gift items, domestic items, footwear and clothing items. These days, Scheunemann’s main focus is clothing.

The Heartstrong Fire, fueled by high winds, burned 24,000 acres in Yuma County March 18, destroying two homes and injuring three firefighters.
HHS seniors Laura Gerk and Reid Baumgartner earned all-conference honors from the Lower Platte Activities Association’s All-Conference lists. Earning honorable mention were junior Erin Vieselmeyer and sophomore Logan Tharp.

The Northeast Colorado Subdistrict of the United Methodist Church’s Rocky Mountain Conference recently recognized Alta Kumm of Holyoke with the Quiet Disciple award.

After one school year as high school principal, Byron Clemsen’s request for resignation was approved by the Holyoke School District Re-1J Board of Education.
Cochrane and Associates, an economic development consultation firm based in Greeley, has been hired by the Holyoke City Council to try to bring new business to town.

The Amherst school will not be used as an attendance center for the 1967-68 school year, and the pupils who would have attended school at Amherst will be brought to school in Holyoke by bus.
Firemen from five towns were called yesterday to fight a stubborn grass fire in the sandhills between Schram, 6 miles east of Yuma, and a point a few miles northeast of Eckley. The burned area is roughly 8 or 9 miles long and 1 to 3 miles wide.
As the milk strike entered its sixth day yesterday, there was no shortage of milk in Holyoke grocery stores, but consumers and grocers alike have been concerned that the pinch might be felt in this area. Led by the National Farmers Organization, the milk strike was in effect in 25 states. The withholding of milk from the market by producers is being used in an effort to force an increase of two cents per quart in the price paid to milk producers on the nation’s farms.

Peace officers of Phillips County in Colorado and Hayes and Perkins counties in Nebraska spent Tuesday investigating robberies, which occurred Monday night in Amherst, Venango, Nebraska, and Grant, Nebraska.
The federal government Saturday cleared the way for induction into the armed forces of the country thousands of men who have been subject to deferment theretofore because of the occupations in which they were engaged. It was officially announced by national selective service headquarters and officials that in the future “only those civilian activities which are really necessary to war production or essential to the support of the war effort can be accorded the protection of occupational deferment from military service.”
