Safety issues of all kinds will be addressed at the free Stay Safe Defense Awareness classes being brought to Phillips County by Holyoke Lions Club, Phillips County Sheriff’s Office, Phillips County Victim Assistance Program, S.A.R.A. Inc., Haxtun Hospital and Haxtun Police Department.

May 23 was the last day of a six-week junior EMT course for Holyoke High School students, which culminated in students preparing a landing zone on the football field, watching an AirLife helicopter land, meeting the crew and learning what their jobs entail, and finally touring the aircraft.

 

Ten Years Ago

May 30, 2013

Several proposed changes for 2013-14 to the Holyoke School District grading policy and Academic Opportunity Center were reviewed at the May 21 meeting of the Board of Education. Two years ago, the AOC was created as a pilot program requiring students to correct all assignments, and last year it became policy. For 2013-14, the primary proposed change notes that unit assessments will be given only one time at the JR/SR high and students will not have the opportunity to correct tests.

Approximately 15 kids hit Holyoke Lions Club Fishin’ Hole on May 24 for a four-hour fishing camp put together by Colorado Parks and Wildlife and Phillips County Extension Office.

Colorado State University Extension is offering a new summer camp called GEAR-Tech-21, aimed at introducing youth to robotics and GPS/GIS technologies, at three sites in northeast Colorado — Akron, Holyoke and Yuma.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago

June 4, 1998

Holyoke High School students saw how to apply school skills to real life May 27 as they solved a mock murder at the Phillips County Fairgrounds. The learning concept behind the activity is known as interdisciplinary lesson plans. By integrating classes, students have the chance to combine everything they have learned to solve a real-life problem.

Mark Knudson, former pitcher for the Colorado Rockies, will be the focus of activities at the local ballpark on June 6. Knudson’s visit to Holyoke is a fundraiser for Golden Plains Recreation Center.

Martha “Inie” Brown, a longtime resident of Holyoke, turned 100 years old on May 31.

 

Fifty Years Ago

May 31, 1973

High winds that plagued Holyoke for three days caused severe damage throughout town last week. A mobile home was completely demolished by high winds that suddenly struck Holyoke on May 21, and many trees and TV antennas received extensive damage.

Holyoke High School chapters of FBLA and FFA, along with all high school students, held a cleanup day on May 21. Several trucks with crews picked up trash, cans, etc. along highways and county roads around Holyoke. The cleanup campaign netted approximately 25 tons of rubbish.

The first men’s softball tournament will be held at the Holyoke Ballpark on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

June 3, 1948

The Brush-Sterling-Holyoke transmission line, completion of which will be celebrated locally on June 11, is an 85-mile-long link in Bureau of Reclamation plans to aid urban and rural development in eastern Colorado, western Nebraska and most of Wyoming. Seminoe Dam and Power Plant, on the North Platte River, will be the source of power for Highline Electric Association’s members.

The Co-op Grocery and Hardware at Amherst was broken into Friday evening by a 15-year-old youth who had escaped from the reformatory at Golden that same day. Taken from the store was about $26 in change and a complete change of clothing for the boy.
