Power outages, strayed cattle and stranded motorists resulted from a zero-visibility Friday the 13th spring blizzard that roared into northeast Colorado on April 13 and shut down the region.

April is National Donate Life Month, a time to encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors. The Holyoke Driver License Office, located in the Phillips County Clerk and Recorder Office, has been recognized for the highest donor designation rate for offices of its size.

 

Ten Years Ago

April 18, 2013

Plans to implement a five-day mail delivery system were halted April 9 when the United States Postal Service Board of Governors met to discuss the Continuing Resolution recently passed by Congress. In March, Congress inserted language into the Continuing Resolution that prohibits the new delivery schedule, which was set to go into place Aug. 5.

After several months of weighing how to proceed with the newly acquired property east of the courthouse, Phillips County commissioners announced that the county will demolish the old bowling alley structure and erect a new parking facility in the 200 block of South Campbell Avenue.

Holyoke is prepared to celebrate its 125th birthday on April 24. Community members are invited to the quasquicentennial event Wednesday night at the HHS auditorium.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago

April 23, 1998

Amendments to the Holyoke Airport Land Use Regulations are being considered by the Phillips County Planning Commission. After discussing the subject for close to two hours on April 20, the planning commission agreed to allow two weeks for submission of written comments. 

After hearing many people express the desire to have a Christian radio station in Holyoke, Jim Blake and Arlan Scholl decided to combine their efforts to try to accommodate those wishes. They’re working with a KJLT engineer to get an FM translator in Holyoke that would pick up a direct signal from the North Platte, Nebraska, tower, which would then rebroadcast KJLT on a different FM frequency.

Manpower and equipment provided by the city and county started a creek bed cleanup project on April 20. The project was a result of requests from citizens who were concerned about the potential for flooding, such as occurred last summer.

 

Fifty Years Ago

April 19, 1973

The Holyoke FFA chapter will hold its annual donkey basketball game at the Holyoke High School gym on April 23. During halftime, the chapter will hold a sale where members will be sold to work for the buyer for a 10-hour period.

The Phillips County 4-H talent night was held April 9 at the Holyoke Grade School before a large and appreciative audience. Twenty acts were presented by the 4-H clubs.

The great Merlin mystery show is coming to Holyoke on May 8, under sponsorship of the Holyoke Lions Club.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

April 22, 1948

The Haxtun Soil Conservation District Tour, to be held May 4, will be covered by radio station KLZ in Denver. KLZ farm reporter Lowell Watts will be on hand during the tour and will make a wire-recording highlighting the activities of the tour, which will be rebroadcast on KLZ on May 5.

According to information supplied by the local post office, proposals are now being received by Post Office Inspector John M. Knudson for the securing of a building suitable for post office purposes in Holyoke. The building must have about 1,800 square feet of floor space and be centrally located. The lease would be for a term of five or 10 years from Jan. 14, 1949.

A bill which was passed by the 1947 legislature provides in part that all trailer coaches used upon the highways are required to purchase title and license plates and pay specific ownership tax.
