Showing solid support for the safety of local law enforcement officers, Holyoke Lions Club is partnering with Shield 616 to fundraise to provide all officers in Phillips County with a Shield 616 armor package involving protective gear.
Advertised as “short stacks for a big cause,” a successful and delicious flapjack feed was put on March 18 by Boy Scout Troop and Pack 32. Aided by their chartered organization, Holyoke Lions Club, the Scouts fed a total of 110 people and raised over $1,000 at the Lions Den.

Highline Electric Association is set to celebrate its 75th anniversary at the annual meeting on March 26 at Phillips County Event Center.
On March 13, a gathering of Catholic cardinals chose Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the cardinal from Argentina, to be the new pope. As the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, he will be called Francis. Six people from Holyoke are excited to see Pope Francis when they travel to World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this summer.

Twenty-Five Years Ago
March 26, 1998

In response to a request from the Holyoke School District, the City of Holyoke passed an ordinance, on first reading, to convey 10 feet of land to the school district at its March 17 meeting. The request came because plans for building additional classrooms onto the west side of the elementary building would put the school too close to the edge of the swimming pool property owned by the city.
The Country Elevator Division of The Scoular Company of Omaha, Nebraska, has reached an agreement to purchase the grain facility at Lamar, Nebraska, from Les, Gene and Stan Smith.
