MMH Foundation forms cancer prescreening financial assistance program

Melissa Memorial Hospital and Melissa Memorial Hospital Foundation are excited to announce a new cancer prescreening financial assistance program.

Healthcare providers in the Family Practice Clinic informed the Foundation there was a need for those who were uninsured or underinsured, and needed to be screened for cancer. Previously, the providers would inform a patient there was a need for cancer prescreening based on their symptoms, and those without insurance would refuse the screening and leave. Providers sought to find an answer.

The answer came from the collaboration between the Family Practice Clinic, the Business Office, the Lab and the Foundation after the successful Cancer Walk hosted by the hospital. The funds from the Cancer Walk will now be used to fund this new program that will cover the costs of cancer prescreening for patients who are uninsured or underinsured.

Dr. JD Bailey, Family Practice physician and Chief of Staff, said, “I am absolutely thrilled that we can now provide the standard of care that everyone deserves.”

The cancer prescreening program is very similar to the hospital’s mammogram program as free mammograms are funded through the Pink Out program each year, which is managed by Megan Garrett of Radiology. The Foundation partners with the hospital as they help to raise money and manage the funds.
