Swine, sheep, goats in PC Showdown

This weekend, the Phillips County Showdown for small animals will feature swine, sheep and goats at the Bank of Colorado Pavilion at the fairgrounds in Holyoke.

Shows will begin at 10 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday, May 22-23.

Two rings will be running each day, and there will be showmanship awards both Saturday and Sunday in all three species.

At 10 a.m. on Saturday, the swine show will be conducted in one ring, with sheep in the second ring. The goat show will follow the sheep.

Sunday morning, the two rings will feature swine and goats at 10 a.m., with sheep to follow the goats.

Showmanship will begin each show, judged in the following order: senior, intermediate, junior and novice.

Weight classes will follow showmanship in both sheep and goat shows.

In the swine shows each day, animals will be judged in the following order after showmanship: Berkshire, Duroc, Hampshire, other purebred breeds, Yorkshire, light crossbred and dark crossbred.

Judges for the showdown are Ben Williams of Hutchinson, Kansas, and Payton Dahmer of Nevada, Missouri.

Payout for the top five in each species in each show will be awarded for the grand champion, reserve grand champion, third, fourth and fifth overall.

The small animal jackpot event expanded this year as last year’s event included only swine entries. Organizers are especially pleased to bring all three animal species to the show arena this weekend and hope to make this an annual event.

Phillips County Showdown committee members include chairman Jeff Plumb, Minda Mares, Bobby Strecker, Shauna Strecker, Jessie Stewart, Steve Starkebaum, Tim Becker, Jessica Oliver, Brooklyn Plumb, Roger Koberstein and Kindra Plumb.
