Over her nearly 30-year career in physical therapy and chronic pain management, Theresa Lopez-Scott has developed an understanding of pain that is more than bone-deep.
Chronic pain, Lopez-Scott said, is multifaceted. It affects a person’s mental and emotional health as well as their physical well-being.
Because of this, treating sufferers of chronic pain demands a holistic approach, which Lopez-Scott is striving to develop with an armamentarium of training that includes a master’s degree in counseling.
“I have a passion for treating chronic pain,” she said. “I want to use every skillset that I have for people, so they have the highest quality of life and are as functional as possible.”
Lopez-Scott began work at Melissa Memorial Hospital Jan. 14 and will be taking the place of physical therapist Leah Hoyer, who will be retiring Feb. 8.
Originally from Cheyenne, Wyoming, Lopez-Scott took preprofessional courses at the University of Wyoming before earning her degree in physical therapy from the University of North Dakota in 1989.
In 1993, she moved to Colorado and started work at the Broncos Sports Medicine Clinic in Aurora. She has since worked in several contexts since coming to Colorado, including chronic pain, occupational medicine and orthopedic physical therapy. She also has experience treating a variety of age groups, including young athletes and patients over age 55.
Lopez-Scott said the decision to complement her training and experience with an advanced degree in counseling was both a spiritual calling and came from a place of wanting to communicate more deeply with her patients. In 2010, Lopez-Scott entered the master’s program at Colorado Christian University, graduating in 2016.
