Having recently finished her internship with Melissa Memorial Hospital, Holyoke High School junior Josie Herman reflected on a summer of service during the Aug. 28 board meeting of the East Phillips County Hospital District.
The internship was run through Phillips County Economic Development and Ogallala Commons, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that partners with Great Plains communities to offer leadership and workforce experience for rural youth. Premier Farm Credit also made a financial contribution to Herman’s internship.
The internship required Herman to attend a two-day orientation in Texas, perform 200 hours of work, complete 10 hours of community service, post five blogs and participate in two harvesting ceremonies.
Herman worked with several employees in different departments around the hospital and helped MMH with implementing its dental clinic. She specifically mentioned shadowing operations director Heather Cloward, and getting experience in the physical therapy and lab departments.
Herman said she is interested in a career in health care, and getting the chance to work in multiple areas of the facility was a valuable part of the internship experience.
