With a tea bottle in the foreground for scale, a healthy stand of wheat east of Holyoke just west of the state line offers hope of a hefty harvest.

A hopeful harvest awaits

Area wheat is looking promising, with tall, dense stands evident through much of the local area. Steve Young of CHS Grainland said that despite quite a bit of area activity spraying for wheat rust and a couple of wheat streak mosaic virus reports, it looks to be an overall above-average crop this year.

While wheat appeared to be 7-10 days ahead of schedule earlier this spring, stretches of cool days helped to slow down this timeline. Most wheat looks to be on time or slightly early now, with hot-versus-wet days in these last weeks of June the determinant for when harvest will actually begin.
