Harvest crews: You aren’t forgotten

Casey Blake, at left, and Michelle Harms surprise Riley Dubbert’s wheat harvest crew with goodie bags and are in turn surprised with a photo taken by the crew. For several years, the local Star 92.3 radio station has been hand-delivering harvest bags to area crews during both wheat and corn harvest. The bags are filled to the brim with snacks, drinks, encouraging messages and more — all donated by sponsoring businesses. Blake and Harms are a welcome sight for harvest crews, and farmers genuinely appreciate the thoughtfulness and generosity of the many people who make the goodie bags possible. The later-than-usual harvest has wrapped up for the most part in eastern Phillips County, reported Evan Fust, general manager at CHS Grainland. He said yields have been very good, test weights are good, and protein is higher than expected given the above-average yields. He’s heard a lot of producers talk about 80 bushel/acre fields, which is considerably higher than a typical 60 bushel/acre wheat harvest. CHS Grainland is already transitioning to yellow pea harvest after the excellent wheat crop.
