CSU offers food safety training

For those interested in marketing their homemade food products, Colorado State University Extension will provide a food safety training Friday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the CSU Extension Logan County office in Sterling.
The training meets the food safety training requirement for the Colorado Cottage Foods Act, which was established and supported by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Attendees will learn the foods that are permissible in the Cottage Foods Act, ingredient labeling requirements as well as basic food safety for a home business.
Extension agents Sheila Gains, Mary Snow and Anne Zander will lead the training, which will provide a three-year certification.
Attendees will leave with an understanding of food safety guidelines and the specifics for operating a small, home-based cottage food business from a home kitchen.
The main sections of the training cover food safety guidelines for preparing foods in a home kitchen, which is different from a food service site that would be inspected by the County and/or State Health Departments. It will cover the basics of proper hygiene; preventing cross contamination and cross-contact of food allergens; temperature control for safe food preparation, storage, transporting products and sales.
