4th-graders benefit from local businesses’ expertise

Lucky fourth-graders at Holyoke Elementary got an inside look at three unique industries on a day filled with field trips last Friday, Aug. 31. In the morning, they traveled to Wray to visit the Wray Fish Hatchery, but for the afternoon, they learned from hometown experts at Highline Electric Association and Vieselmeyer Seed Inc.
At Highline, a representative from Tri-State G&T taught students about different ways electricity is made and some of its key characteristics. She even let them try out a Van de Graaff generator, which made their hair stand on end.
Employees Imer Rodriguez and Derek Roberts showed students the protective equipment they use when working with electricity, including gloves, hard hats and goggles. To wrap up their visit, students saw first-hand the risks of power lines, as a dummy with a melon head and hot dog fingers got zapped.
Visiting a corn field, students learned about parts of the plant and how it grows from Erik and Michelle Vieselmeyer. They discussed the differences between field corn and sweet corn and what each is used for.
