FFA, FCCLA give back at annual service sale

Rescheduled to Thursday, March 23, from Monday, March 6, due to the Logan/Phillips County fire, HHS FFA and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America chapters modified the purpose of their annual service sale and Rocky Mountain Oyster fry in light of the circumstances.

The annual fundraiser is a major one for the chapters, allowing students to attend leadership training conferences and competitive events. This year, however, both FFA and FCCLA officer teams were auctioned off to benefit the those affected by the fire. FFA raised $1,200  and FCCLA $1,000 for a total of $2,200 donated.

Besides the amount donated, the sale raised $10,656.50 this year for the 23 FCCLA and 34 FFA members. FFA members made an average of $214 per member, and FCCLA $147 per member.

The meal and sale were both held this year in the old gym at Holyoke JR/SR High School. Besides that change, however, the format was the same as the last few years. One FFA member and one FCCLA member were up for sale at the same time, sparring in fun as bidding proceeded.

Members were auctioned off beginning at $75 for an eight-hour day of work. The winning bidder selected one of the two students on stage and the bidding began again for the one remaining. Bidders sometimes selected both, paying twice what they had bid to get the pair.

FCCLA and FFA members expressed sincere appreciation for the support received and were glad for the chance to support those in need.
