Chase Hahn
Chase Corbett Hahn, 21, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died July 3, 2023, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, Tennessee.
He was born Dec. 14, 2001, in Kearney, Nebraska, son of Corbett and Christine (Meis) Hahn.
When Chase was born, it was quickly discovered that he had a serious medical issue and was soon diagnosed with a heart defect. He was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, when he was just a few hours old.
After just a couple of days, doctors performed open-heart surgery to repair his heart. Unfortunately, the good news was short-lived as it was later discovered that Chase had a defect in his lungs and was diagnosed with primary pulmonary hypertension. Chase’s illness led him to spend many days in the hospital to endure different procedures. With every new advance in medicine, Chase was right there to give it a try.
With no other treatment options available, it was suggested that Chase look at lung transplant surgery. After several evaluations at various transplant centers, Vanderbilt University in Nashville agreed to do his procedure, although Chase was considered to be a complicated case due to his prior surgeries. Unfortunately, the transplant developed complications and ultimately his new lungs failed.
Although Chase struggled due to his illness, he pushed through it to enjoy life to the fullest. Chase enjoyed spending time playing video games online with friends and watching NBA basketball. He was a big fan of Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors.
Chase’s greatest joy was playing cards with his family, especially his Grandma Carol and Grandpa Gary. Chase’s love of cards and his competitive nature led him to join his dad’s weekly poker group, and he immediately became one of the guys. When he was asked about gambling at poker, Chase replied, “It’s not gambling if you know you’re gonna win.”
Chase also had a love of trivia, especially anything about the NBA and movies. Chase would often challenge his cousins to name a movie and he would tell them the year it came out. He could also name every NBA champion for the last 50 years in order by year. When the local theater began holding trivia nights, he did not hesitate when asked to play on the team with his dad and friends. Chase’s quick wit, gift of gab and caring nature gave him the uncanny ability to connect with people of all ages.
Survivors include his parents, Corbett and Christine of Gothenburg; brother, Collin C. Hahn (Nya Jueny) and nephew Myles J. Hahn of Omaha; paternal grandparents, Carol and Gary Krumm of Holyoke and Lana Hahn of Sterling; maternal grandparents, Charles and Pamela Meis of Albion, Nebraska; aunt Kinnie (Michael) Reuter of Kimball, Nebraska; aunt Wendy (Eric) Hyer of Shawnee, Kansas; uncle Anthony (Maria) Meis of Gretna, Nebraska; aunt Maria (Isaac) Rath of Elkhorn, Nebraska; uncle Adam (Lori) Meis of Boone, Iowa; uncle Dana Meis of Grand Island, Nebraska; cousins, Tyson Reuter of Casper, Wyoming, Blythe (Travis) Diamond, Caleb Reuter and Izaac Reuter of Kimball, Camryn Burns, Kadyn Burns, Addisyn Burns and Rogan Burns of Shawnee, Charlie Meis, Maggie Meis, Finley Meis and Maeve Meis of Gretna, and Taylor Rath and Zachary Rath of Elkhorn.
Chase was preceded in death by his grandfather Douglas K. Hahn, and step-uncles Phillip Krumm and Paul Krumm.
Services were held July 10 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Gothenburg, with Fr. Josephravi Gudipalli officiating.
Burial followed in the Gothenburg Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
