Marie Mailander - October 18, 2013


Marie Joseffa (Ortner) Mailander was born March 28, 1924, to Mary (Medinger) Ortner and John Ortner in their rural home in the Holyoke area. Marie died Oct. 18, 2013, in Holyoke at the age of 89.

She attended Lone Star School and Phillips County High School, graduating with the class of 1941. After completing her studies in the Chillicothe Business College in Missouri, Marie was employed in Chicago before returning to her parents’ home to help them with the farm work during the years of WWII.

In May 1946, Marie and Leo Mailander were united in marriage in St. Patrick Catholic Church in Holyoke. To this union were born eight children, five of whom survive her. They are James and wife Marlene of Queensland, Australia, Robert and wife Rita of Denver, Joan of Minneapolis, Minn., Paul and wife Teresa of Holyoke and Leo F. of Holyoke.

Marie is also survived by her sisters, Catherine Goddard and Dorothy Ortner; brother, John Ortner; and grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.

Preceding Marie in death were her parents, Mary and John Ortner; husband, Leo R. Mailander; son, Michael; infant daughter, Mary Ann; infant son, William; granddaughter, Erin Marie; brother, Joseph Ortner; and sisters, Margaret Rader and Helen Augustenborg.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Oct. 22 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Holyoke with Father William Jungmann officiating. Interment followed at the Holyoke Cemetery.
