Hazel Alberts - April 08, 2013
Hazel Lorene (Vogel) Alberts was born March 8, 1918, in Cortland, Neb., to Albert Crist and Mabel Lola (Schwartz) Vogel. She died April 8, 2013, at Regent Park Nursing Home in Holyoke.
In 1920, Hazel moved with her family in an emigrant car to a farm one-half mile north of Paoli. She went to school in Paoli until the second grade when her family moved to a ranch south of Vernon, on the Arickaree River.
Two years later, they moved back to Paoli, two miles north and one mile east, where she attended Prairie Star School until the eighth grade. She then worked for Oscar Lohn’s grocery store in Paoli. Some of her best times in those years were playing with the “Benson Transfer” softball team, which played in Colorado, Nebraska and Kansas and in state tournaments in Denver.
Chester Alberts began courting Hazel at social functions in Paoli, and they were married Aug. 9, 1936, by Reverend Haruf in Fleming. They lived in Julesburg, Sterling and then Derby until 1945 when Chet was drafted into the Army and Hazel moved to Holyoke with their children, Peggy, Lola and Vern to be near family.
When Chet returned from the service, they continued to live in Holyoke, and Frances, Jim and Linda were added to the family. Hazel began working at Melissa Memorial Hospital in 1966 and continued to work there until age 82 when she retired. Working at Melissa Memorial was an important part of Hazel’s life, and many people remember her caring and dedication.
Hazel had a great love of sports, following her grandchildren and great-grandchildren playing local high school sports, watching baseball games at the local diamond and following professional football, baseball and basketball games.
Hazel entered Carriage House Assisted Living in 2007 and died at Regent Park Nursing Home April 8, 2013.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Mabel Vogel; husband, Chester; sisters, Fern Singmaster and Mirlan Demmel; brother, Kenneth Vogel; infant sister, Lola Vogel; daughter, Lola Schull; son-in- law, Merle Bennett; and an infant great-grandson.

Hazel had 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Services were held April 12 at the Holyoke Methodist Church with Pastor Al Strauss officiating. Interment was at the Holyoke Cemetery.

In honor of her many years of dedication to Melissa Memorial Hospital, memorials will be donated to the Melissa Memorial Hospital Foundation.
