Collaborative efforts for the City of Holyoke’s 125th anniversary special section published by The Holyoke Enterprise earned two awards in this year’s National Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Contest.
The 36-page newspaper section was featured in the June 13, 2013, Enterprise in conjunction with Holyoke’s 125th anniversary celebration.
The section won second place in the Best Multiple Advertiser Section for non-daily newspapers with a circulation of less than 5,000.
Brenda Brandt compiled individual histories and photos for local businesses, which were then made into creative advertisements for the section by Darci Tomky.
“Fabulous section!” wrote the judges. “Love the use of black and white to create an ‘old time’ feeling, as well as the creative ads in the piece. Well done!”
The section also earned third place in the Best Special News, Sports or Feature Section or Edition for non-daily newspapers with a circulation of 3,000-9,999.
Holyoke Enterprise staff members Brenda Brandt, Darci Tomky, Kyle Arnoldy, Becca Brandt and Ashley Sullivan, as well as writers Jes-c (Brandt) French, Cheryl Bryan and Joe Hall worked together on articles and photos for the section.
