Bean recipes, quilts added to contests this year
The July 20-27 Phillips County Fair is just around the corner, so it’s time to get ready for the open class competition and special themes contests.
New to this year’s Fair is Jack’s Bean Company’s Bean’ Your Best Contest. They invite people to submit their favorite bean dish Saturday, July 26, from 11:30 a.m.-noon in the Phillips County Event Center Ortner Room.
Then from noon-2 p.m., people’s choice judging will take place to declare the first-, second- and third-place winners, with cash prizes to be awarded.
Entries are limited to one per person, and participants can pick up free beans at Jack’s Bean in Holyoke.
Another new category is the High Plains Heritage Quilters Scrap Quilt Contest. Entries may be quilts of any size, quilted clothing, accessories, etc., but the quilted creation must contain at least 25 different fabrics.
The contest is limited to one entry per person, with cash prizes awarded to first, second and third.
Quilts may be entered Wednesday, July 23, from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. in the Event Center exhibit hall.
Other special themes contests and open class entries must also be entered from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, with the exception of the bean and salsa competitions and the sweetest baby-toddler contest.
Open class will be judged Thursday, July 24, beginning at 9 a.m. The exhibit hall will be closed during judging.
