Five Holyoke summer baseball teams traveled to Chappell, Neb., for the Border League Baseball Tournament Wednesday, June 25, with two returning to town crowned as champions Saturday, June 28.
Holyoke-2 PeeWee team posted a perfect 3-0 record to edge out seven other teams for the top honors, and the Holyoke Little League squad was undefeated in their two games to claim the championship.
Holyoke PeeWee teams have strong showing
In the PeeWee division, sixth-seeded Holyoke-2 took the top spot by upsetting top-ranked Sedgwick County 13-3. Holyoke advanced to the finals by knocking off third-seeded Oshkosh, Neb., in the first round and beating No. 2 Chappell in the semifinals. Sedgwick County beat No. 8 Holyoke-1 9-2 and fourth-seeded Haxtun en route to the championship.
After a first-round loss to Sedgwick County, Holyoke-1 went on to beat Fleming and earn a fifth-place finish by topping Oshkosh 6-1. No. 7 Holyoke-4 fell to Chappell in the opening round and to Oshkosh 1-6 in the consolation bracket.
Haxtun posted a 2-1 record in the tournament, beating Chappell 12-5 in the third-place match.
